Trail Running Shoes Demand Grows

Fifteen years ago you never heard the term 'trail running'. These days, more than six million people compete regularly in more than 700 US trail races. And the sport's popularity continues to grow. Trail running shoes are probably the most important part of the little gear you need to compete successfully - and they're different from the athletic shoes required for more civilized events. The most common injuries in trail running are sprained ankles, problems which rarely occur during road and track runs. The shoes are therefore designed to be tougher and more stable. Their tread is also beefed up - much like a four-wheel-drive tire compared with a car tire. They provide greater traction in a variety of conditions and help prevent stone bruises. Uppers are often made of membrane materials that keep your feet dry and warm. The most important factor in your choice, however - as with any footwear - is how well the particular shoe fits you. The importance is magnified when you're pounding through rugged terrain a long way from support. So make sure your toes stay clear of the shoe in downhill runs, the heels grip your heels, and there is sufficient space around your foot even when your feet have swelled to race-size.
